Pockets of Sedition
This work was inspired by the poem Dangerous Coats by Sharon Owens and answers the call to ‘make dangerous coats, full of pockets and sedition’. As a literal interpretation I have taken pockets salvaged from old pairs of jeans and attached them to this pre-loved Betty Jackson coat.
Dangerous Coats
Someone clever once said
Women were not allowed pockets
In case they carried leaflets
To spread sedition
Which means unrest
To you & me
A grandiose word
For commonsense
Fairness
Kindness
Equality
So ladies, start sewing

Leftie Snowflake
In my experience ‘Leftie Snowflake’ is an insult used to describe those on the Left who are offended by things like childhood poverty, refugees drowning in the Channel and 1% pay rises for nurses.
In my mind compassion and empathy means you are a decent human being.
I have decorated the left hand side of this pre-loved coat with brightly coloured snowflakes to show pride in being compassionate.
Dissent Is Not A Crime (2021)
This jacket was made at very short notice to wear to a socially distanced protest against the proposed Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Bill. The slogan panel had been made around 6 months previously as part of my Banners (2020) series.
