Drip & Splat

These works made in 2023 show the beginnings of a playful re-visitation into techniques and materials that have, in the past, been core fundamentals of my practice.

 

An inspection of materiality and a grateful nod to Janet Sobel (1893-1968), the mother of the drip painting, these works are an indulgent return to my childhood and teenage years, when I didn’t believe I could be an artist, because I have no talent for drawing, so I just ‘made a 'mess’ instead. 

 

Janet Sobel did not start painting until she was 45, similar in age to me now. She too didn’t consider herself an artist, just a housewife with a hobby. However, if it were not for the insistence of her son that Sobel’s work be exhibited a young Jackson Pollock would not have seen and been inspired by her work and go on to become a world renowned artist painting in her style.
