Beth Williams - Artist, Mother, Witch

I am a defiant artist, mother & witch. I combine my artistic practice with my spiritual practice by channeling energy from the universe to make work as part of ritual celebrations on significant dates following the Lunar cycle and Pagan Wheel of the Year. My dual practice connects me and the work back to nature and honors the Great Cosmic Mother.

I occupy a very tiny amount of space, in the grand scheme of things. The paths my journeys take me on are familiar, well-trodden, seldom deviated from, and they weave across the local landscape like threads, overlapping and repeating. Along the way I look for hidden things and the unnoticed, for moments of awe and chances to connect to the elements.. I am interested in the vibrations contained within sacred spaces and the energies held by water.

I work in ceramics, textiles and camera-less photography and I really enjoy the alchemical cyanotype process. I research and experiment with traditional techniques such as natural dyeing and plant derived inks. I use materials such as wild clay and botanicals from sites around Folkestone that are sacred to me. I want to relearn old knowledge in preparation for the collapse of civilisation, when humans will still want to make art and wear colourful clothes.

I try to use low tech methodologies to reduce my impact on the environment as I am very concerned about the climate crisis. Sustainability is a key aspect of my practice, and I scavenge, forage and repurpose materials wherever I can.

I make things that I think are beautiful and / or useful, to me personally and hopefully to the wider audience.

Beth believes that art should be accessible to everyone (not just people who know what liminal means) and feels that artists have a duty to speak for those who can’t.
